A Rare and Beautiful Historic Property - Lake of Bays
$2,995,000
Waterfront property on Lake of Bays was being settled before the turn of the last century. In 1899 John Pratt was given the original Crown Patent of Lot 11 Concession 9 in the Township of Franklin. This property was situated on the east side of Dwight Bay in the north east corner of the Lake of Bays along the north side of the Oxtongue River. Mr. Pratt was from England. His purpose in buying the property was to build a sanatorium for his wife back in England who was very sick with Tuberculosis. A foundation was laid for the "San" as it was referred to at the time. Unfortunately, Mrs. Pratt died before anymore work was completed on the project. Evidence of the foundation of the San is still visible.
Today approximately 65 acres of this original land is now available. A most singular private waterfront country estate designed in the tradition of "the cottage" of bygone times. This unique property is a rare find in Muskoka today. The site is gently rolling to flat terrain featuring over 900 feet of sandy shoreline as well as 1600 feet of pristine frontage on the Oxtongue River, which borders the property to the southeast. Part of this property is a protected nature preserve along the shore of the river to keep this important feature just as it was centuries ago when the First Nations tribes plied this route in their birchbark canoes enroute to what today is known as nearby Algonquin Park.
The premium view from this property is strait down the reach of Dwight Bay to the southwest for 8 kilometres. The property features one of the finest sand beaches found anywhere in Muskoka. The water is very clear as it is fed from the verdant unsettled expanses of the Algonquin Highlands to the northeast. There are two accesses to the property, one from either side. The more private entrance is from Provincial Highway 35 just south of the intersection of Highways 60 and 35 in the village of Dwight Ontario. A second entrance is from Lake of Bays Lane which winds along the shore of Lake of Bays one kilometre from Dwight.
